Kusama is a public block chain network that is running the exact same codebase as Polkadot. It is aimed to be a canary build for the Polkadot network which is an experimental and development environment for new features that will eventually be deployed to Polkadot.
Because of the experimental nature of Kusama, the developmental speed is much faster and it has seen significant traction since launched in 2019.
KUSAMA History / Information / Buying / Staking
Kusama was founded in 2016 by the creators of Polkadot, Gavin Wood (a co-founder of Ethereum), Peter Czaban and Robert Habermeier. Wood’s background is notable as he invented Solidity, the language used by developers to write decentralized applications (dapps) on Ethereum.
HOW KUSAMA WORKS
Kusama is a public pre-production environment for Polkadot, one that allows any developer to experiment and test new blockchains or applications before releasing them on this network. In this way, it can be said Kusama acts as a kind of sandbox for developers looking to test early versions of Polkadot projects, but with real cryptocurrency traded on an open market.
BENEFITS OF USING KUSAMA
Some of the benefits of using Kusama are:
Kusama allows developers with access to different blockchains through the KSM token, offering them with flexibility
Kusama is truly decentralised as the holders of KSM run the network instead of a handful of specific individuals or participants
Kusama is highly secure as result of its decentralised nature
CAN YOU STAKE KUSAMA
Kusama network works on a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism, a variation of PoS. NPoS varies by having two different types of stakeholder: validators and nominators. Staking Kusama through a wallet, a user has three options. You can either use the Polkadot.js user interface (website), the Polkawallet (mobile app), or the Polkadot.js browser extension.
